LOGLINE
THE SOLDIER & THE BUTTERFLY weaves a poignant narrative of a WORLD WAR II Japanese soldier and a Korean COMFORT WOMAN whose lives intersect in the most unexpected of ways.
OUR STORY
BETWEEN 1938-1942, JAPAN OCCUPIED SOUTH KOREA.
IT WAS COMMON PRACTICE FOR JAPANESE SOLDIERS TO VISIT KOREAN “COMFORT WOMEN” FOR SEX.
THE MAJORITY OF THESE CASES WERE UNSPEAKABLE ACTS OF VIOLENCE.
HOWEVER, A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF COMFORT WOMEN ALSO DESCRIBED COMPLEX, LONGSTANDING EMOTIONAL BONDS TO SOME OF THOSE SOLDIERS.
IN THOSE INSTANCES, A MERE EMBER OF TENDERNESS PIERCED THROUGH THE IMPERIAL CRUELTY OF JAPAN.
THIS IS THE STORY OF HARUTO & KYUNG-JA.
